Something Less Serious
Normally, I blog about very serious subject matter about which I feel strongly and attempt to sound authoritative and influential. This post will contain none of this and will be something less serious. First will come my most recent larger complaints, followed by some things I think are good.
COMPLAINTS:
1. The first thing I have to complain about is how frequently I need to urinate at work. It seems that I can go from mildly dehydrated to pissing like a Clydesdale in 1 liter! By the time I get half way through the second liter, I’m peeing hourly. I guess it’s not as bad as the guy who I discovered s(h)itting in the dark because the motion-switched lighting had turned off on him. I have it on good authority that the timer is set for 15 minutes, so you shouldn’t take a newspaper or magazine in with you and expect to get much reading done.
2. Twitter has become nearly useless to me. I began using Twitter to read what some of my friends were up to and to post short (140 characters or less) descriptions of my own opinions and whatabouts (a word I made up). More recently, I’ve found Twitter to be far too disconnected and dysfunctional. It’s not good at all for conversations, because tweets are limited to 140 characters. It’s lousy for learning opinions of others for the same reason. Basically, Twitter really is just ego and self-importance micro-blogging. It’s a little platform for people to bitch about whatever little irritation’s they’re currently enduring. Twitter isn’t even very good for gathering breaking news, because it’s impossible to know what news is true and what news is false. Basically, Twitter doesn’t do anything well, so I’m now calling it rubbish.
3. I’ve stopped listening to nearly all of the video game podcasts to which I used to subscribe. None of them seem to have anything original or interesting to say any more. They just regurgitate the numbers and talk about what games they’ve been playing or what games are hot on the iPhone. Since I really couldn’t give two squirts about what the average prima dona game reviewer/podcaster is playing on their pretentious little button-challenged iPhones, I’m pretty much done with video game podcasts. They don’t seem to offer anything interesting that I can’t get from RSS feeds.
4. My upcoming work schedule will suck. In their infinite wisdom, management has decided that I’m needed on 3rd shift this week, on 1st week next week, and then back on 3rd shift at our other plant north of town the following week. My sleep cycle will no doubt suffer, rendering me even more cranky than is normal for an anti-social robot type.
GOOD THINGS:
1. Firefox 3.5 was released this week. The Weave synchronization add-on is awesome for getting all of your bookmarks and passwords synced up on multiple computers. Sure, a couple of my add-ons broke when I upgraded, but that’s what progress is all about, breaking things to make things better!
2. Because of the July 4th holiday here in the US, I have July 2nd off. Since we 3rd shifters don’t work Fridays, I also have July 3rd off. Therefore, I have a four day weekend which I will use to switch over to a 1st shift sleep cycle.
3. While walking to work, I’ve begun listening to The Gunslinger, the first book in The Dark Tower series, by Stephen King. So far, it has defied the ignorant prejudice I developed against the author based upon his movies. In fact, I think I’m hooked!
