OpenSuse Experiment: Day 2

leave a comment »

It's day 2 of my 7 day OpenSuse experiment.  This morning I installed Audacity just in case I have some time and motivation to record something.  Also, I'm listening to some podcasts that were downloaded on my Dell desktop (Infinity) while I was at work last night.  It's pretty cool that I can connect to my Microsoft home network from OpenSuse.  That would have been a buzz kill for me since I do most of my media downloading on Infinity which is back in my bedroom.

I just set up Korn, an email notification program.  Now I don't have to leave Thunderbird up and running in the background.  Also, I noticed that I don't currently have an FTP client installed.  Rectified that by installing gftp.  I'm sure I'll come across a few more areas where OpenSuse doesn't have a program installed to handle something by default, and I'll jump those hurdles when I come to them.  So far, so good.

UPDATE:  Here's one of those hurdles I mentioned, I need to figure out how to launch applications at startup.  In XP it's fairly simple.  Either the program has an option to launch at startup built in, or you just add the shortcut to the application to the Startup folder.  Piece of cake.  In Linux, I don't even know if there is a "Startup" folder or the equivalent.  Guess I'll start my search now and get back to you.
